Aphasia is a common condition. According to estimates, at least 2 million people have aphasia just in the United States alone. But despite aphasia being common, it remains a widely unknown and misunderstood condition.
Aphasia Awareness Month — held annually each June — provides an opportunity to educate, connect, and inspire communities to support those affected by aphasia.
This past June, Virtual Connections members participated in a virtual 5k race to raise aphasia awareness. Virtual races are unique because participants complete the 3.1-mile distance on their own, in their own communities, at any time during the month. Each week, participants gathered on Virtual Connections Zoom sessions to discuss their training, share fitness tips, and encourage one another.
Participants from across the United States, Canada, and even Ireland joined the event. Some completed the 3.1 miles in one go, while others broke it up over several days. Whether walking, running, biking, or a combination of all three, 16 people with aphasia completed the Virtual Connections Aphasia Awareness 5k.
Each finisher received a certificate of completion and shared their experiences during Zoom sessions. One member proudly noted it was the first race she had completed since her stroke. Another participant not only finished the virtual 5k but also registered for a physical race in his hometown, wearing an aphasia t-shirt to raise local awareness. Remarkably, a third member challenged himself to complete the 5k distance 18 times throughout June.
The Aphasia Awareness 5k offered more than just a physical challenge; it fostered a sense of community. Aphasia can be incredibly isolating, but these Zoom sessions provided vital social support, shared interests, and a platform to celebrate each other’s accomplishments. Virtual Connections’ mission is to unite people living with aphasia worldwide, and this event was a testament to that goal.
If you missed the Aphasia Awareness Virtual 5k, don’t worry. Virtual Connections offers a variety of virtual fitness sessions.
