Take Our Positive Psychology in Aphasia Support Groups Course

In our course on positive psychology techniques and their role in facilitating aphasia support groups, Speech Language Pathologists (SLPs) will learn about how to integrate specific techniques into facilitation of support groups geared specifically toward people with aphasia. We’ll explore key aspects, including:

    • identifying the fundamentals of positive psychology
    • applying the three positive psychology techniques to support group facilitation
    • explain the relationship between positive psychology and the Life Participation Approach to Aphasia (LPAA)

Lingraphica’s course, “Integrating Positive Psychology Techniques in Aphasia Support Groups,” focuses on demonstrating and describing ways to implement positive psychology techniques in aphasia support groups. By doing so, SLPs can have a positive impact on the resilience, well-being, mindfulness, and self-advocacy of the members of their aphasia support groups.

In this course, we will discuss positive psychology and its benefits to people living with communication disorders. We will review and explore the basic tenets of positive psychology, as well as positive psychology as it relates to LPAA and the mission of aphasia support groups.

We will also explore the Positive Emotion, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, Achievement (PERMA) perspective and present the evidence that supports the use of positive psychology. We will spend time unpacking each of five positive psychology techniques and present ways to incorporate them into support groups. These include A Good thing Happened, Positive Consequences After A Stroke, and You at Your Best, among others. Each of these will be broken down into actionable ideas to bring to aphasia support groups.

Finally, we will provide ways to both actively  respond to news events delivered by a PWA. We will include implementation examples, including ways to address negative emotions that may come up in treatment. We will emphasize active listening, dialogue, and creating a narrative around responding to and processing negative emotions that may come up in treatment and support groups.
