People with aphasia and other speech or language impairments experience many challenges in their day-to-day lives. The ability to speak, read, write, and understand language can range from mildly challenging to severely difficult. When those abilities fall short, it can disrupt any task or interaction that involves speech or language — including one’s right to vote.
In the United States, voting is meant to be a sacred and core principle. But disability can profoundly affect participation in civic activities, adding another form of marginalization to one of the most marginalized groups in the world.
To this end, Lingraphica stands in support of the For the People Act. This landmark legislation would protect and expand our democracy, which is essential for the individuals we serve. The For the People Act would help to remove barriers that make it harder to cast a ballot for our community members. A healthy democracy depends on their participation in the election system free from discriminatory practices.
Lingraphica is calling on the Senate to ensure that the speech-language impairment community can safely and freely cast their ballots in each of every election by passing the For the People Act.
“Lingraphica is proud to support the For the People Act. Voting is a sacred right in our nation, and the aphasia and broader speech-language impairment community faces barriers that can impede this right. It’s clear to us that provisions such as removing barriers to early and absentee voting are very important to our community. We encourage other corporations to join us and speak up to strengthen our democracy.”
