Shows to Binge and Talk About this Holiday Season

Journalists and media writers like to say we’re living in “Peak TV” because there have been a lot of good TV shows recently. But, a lot of the best shows aren’t just aired on traditional networks anymore — many also appear on online streaming services. With the kids and grandkids around for the holidays, these are great shows for people with aphasia, their caregivers, and their families to binge together. Plus, when everyone is tired from playing games and sharing their favorite songs, they make great topics to talk about.

Stranger Things

Netflix

‘80s nostalgia, sci-fi horror, and campy effects come together in this popular show. Inspired in part by Stephen King’s novels, Stranger Things follows a group of kids trying to solve their friend’s mysterious disappearance and the secrets lurking in their hometown. The show moves at a good pace and is only 25 episodes long so far, so it’s perfect for binging.

The Mandalorian

Disney+

The Disney+ streaming service is full of Disney’s original shows and movies, and that makes it perfect for families with young kids. Within its massive catalog however, The Mandalorian really stands out as fun for the whole family. The story takes place in the Star Wars universe but follows some totally new characters. The Mandalorian of the show’s title is an unnamed bounty hunter who accepts a peculiar assignment. Much like original Star Wars’, it feels like a western in space. Plus, it has Baby Yoda.

The Great British Baking Show

Netflix

The idea is simple: Amateur bakers compete for bragging rights. This British competition show has enjoyed a lot of popularity in the UK, and has even been credited with a bump in sales for baking supplies. And it’s not just the UK that has taken notice. It’s been well-received by audiences in the US as well.

The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance

Netflix

The Jim Henson classic gets a second life as a Netflix series. Just like the original movie, this Netflix-produced series is made with puppets and practical effects. The Dark Crystal also has an all-star cast of voice talent, including Anya Taylor-Joy, Mark Hamill, and Helena Bonham Carter.

The Office

Netflix

Even though this series ended more than five years ago, it has remained one of the most popular shows on Netflix. The show is easy to binge, with nine seasons full of quotable, awkward-funny humor. And although the original UK version is also available on Netflix, the US version had arguably surpassed it as the most wildly relatable, wildly funny office comedy in recent memory.
