In our ethics course, Speech Language Pathologists (SLPs) will learn about necessary considerations in the treatment of bilingual AAC patients. We’ll explore key aspects, including:

- describing three ethical considerations needed in the assessment of a bilingual patient with acquired communication disorder
- stating three examples from research on the impairment and recovery patterns that have been observed in bilingual patients with acquired communication disorder
- listing three examples of tools that can facilitate the evaluation and AAC trial process for a bilingual patient with acquired communication disorder
Lingraphica’s ethics course focuses on typical language recovery patterns for bilingual adults with aphasia, and the importance and methods for considering these patterns during evaluations, trials, treatment plan development, and implementation of an AAC device. This course satisfies ASHA’s requirement that at least 1 hour of all professional development hours for certification maintenance must be in the area of ethics.
We will begin by reviewing ASHA’s code of ethics, as well as the laws, standards, and regulations that SLPs abide by. The course will then outline several aspects of bilingualism to be considered during therapy. We will also review the research that supports this information. We will focus on specific areas to consider during evaluation and treatment, as well as AAC evaluation, trial, and implementation.
In this course, SLPs will review what it means to be bilingual. From here, we will outline aspects of bilingualism that should be considered during treatment. These include sociolinguistic principles, ethnographic principles, and neurolinguistic principles. Each of these principles can meaningfully impact both diagnostic and therapeutic strategies when serving the bilingual population.
This course will spend time exploring AAC tools which are available and which benefit bilingual AAC users. Specifically, we will discuss no-tech and low-tech multilingual AAC examples, including communication boards and apps. We will also offer various AAC app examples and explore their benefits and uses. Finally, we will demonstrate how a Lingraphica high-tech AAC device can benefit bilingual users during therapy and at home.
